A DBA — short for "Doing Business As" — lets your business operate under a name different from its legal name. In California, DBAs are called Fictitious Business Names (FBN). Here's how to register one.
Who Needs a DBA?
- Sole proprietors using a name other than their own
- LLCs wanting to operate under a different brand name
- Businesses expanding into a new brand or product line
How to Register in Los Angeles County
- Search the LA County FBN database to confirm name availability
- Complete the Fictitious Business Name Statement form
- File with the LA County Registrar-Recorder (fee: ~$26 for first name)
- Publish your DBA in an adjudicated newspaper for 4 consecutive weeks
- File proof of publication with the County
💡 XbyZ Tip: California law requires you to publish your DBA in a local newspaper within 30 days of filing. XbyZ handles the entire process including publication.
DBA Duration
California DBAs expire after 5 years and must be renewed. Set a reminder so you don't lose your business name.
